1servingedible glitter or spooky decorations for garnish
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Add the black gel food coloring and mix until uniformly black.
Combine the wet and dry ingredients by pouring the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined, but do not overmix.
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Tap the pans on the counter to remove any air bubbles.
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
While the cakes cool, prepare the frosting. In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until it begins to thicken. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, continuing to whip until soft peaks form.
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a generous amount of whipped frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
For a spooky touch, decorate the cake with edible glitter, spider decorations, or other Halloween-themed embellishments.
Notes
